Hugo Mohr - December 27, 2008


Hugo Gus Mohr was born April 3, 1915, at Avoca, Neb., to Gus F. and Olga (Witzke) Mohr. As a young man he moved with his parents from eastern Nebraska to the Hamlet area, where he grew up and attended school.
Hugo graduated from Hamlet High School in 1933. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard on the USS Eridanus during WWII, returning in 1946.
Hugo married Ann Margaret Zumhingst on Nov. 11, 1953, and to this union three sons, Gus, Gary and John, were born. The couple settled in Pierre, S.D., for a short time while Hoot worked on the construction of the Oahe Dam. In 1955, the couple moved to a farm north of Hamlet where they settled and farmed for most of their lives.
Hoot passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 27, 2008, at the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial. He was 93 years of age.
Hoot was a member of the American Legion. He served as a Hayes County Commissioner through the years of 1974-1982. He had many hobbies including playing cards, fishing, hunting and attending sporting events.
Survivors include: sons: Gus and wife, Peggy, of Spanish Forks, Utah; Gary and wife, Doreen, of Enders, Neb., and John and wife, Mary, of Lincoln, Neb.; six grandchildren: Logan, Jesse, Casey, Carly, Angie and Ryan; sisters: Evelyn Meyers and late husband, Paul, of North Platte, Neb.; Lucille Stroh and late husband, Don, of Medford, Ore.; and Norma Rhone and late husband, Dale, of Cozad, Neb.; and sister-in-law, Marian Mohr of Arnold, Neb.
Hoot was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ann in 1994 and one brother, John.
Graveside inurnment services were held Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at 11 a.m. MT at the Hamlet Cemetery, Hamlet, Neb., with Pastor David Kahle officiating.
No visitation was held. Hoot chose cremation.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Wauneta Senior Center, Wauneta, Neb.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
