Lady Broncos finish 16-11, reach district finals again

It was a different volleyball season than many around Wauneta-Palisade expected, but the season was a good one. WP advanced to the district finals thanks to wild card points and finished with a 16-11 record.
Head Coach Terra Higgins said the 2020 season definitely started out differently than coaches expected.
“It was different going from a team of 19 girls down to a team of 13 girls,” Higgins said. “We lost four major role players from last year, which forced our freshmen and sophomores to really step up.”
Higgins said she thought underclassmen Chloe Stehno, Cali Cox, Peyton Cox and GraCee Goings did an excellent job embracing the new roles thrown at them this year and they all improved throughout the season.
The team was led by seniors Haylee Sandman and Payton Yearous.
Higgins said the pair have been excellent leaders throughout their four years on the team.
“Not only have they been role models to these girls on the court, but off the court as well,” Higgins said. “It is because of these two girls that our weight room attendance in the summers grew from two to three girls to 15-20 most years.”
They also are a big reason why so many girls have bought into the volleyball culture that Higgins and her coaches have worked so hard to build and why so many girls have gotten involved in clubs in the off-seasons.
