Mildred Stretch - September 23, 2009

Mildred Pearl Stretch died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at the McCook Community Hospital in McCook, Neb., at the age of 80.
She was born April 1, 1929, on the family farm in Rawlins County, Kan., south of Stratton, Neb. She was the daughter of the late Sherman and Flossie (Hoover) Spears.
She grew up on the farm until the eighth grade when the family moved to Stratton where she graduated from Stratton High School in 1946. She began working as a nurse’s aide in the Stratton Hospital with Dr. Harris.
On June 18, 1950, Mildred married Leslie Stretch in Stratton. They made their home at Wauneta where she worked in the local clothing store, before moving to the farm in 1953 north of Hamlet in Hayes County, Neb. In 1983 they moved to Hamlet where they resided until her passing.
She was a community news reporter for The Wauneta Breeze newspaper and the Hitchcock County News. She enjoyed attending area ladies Bible classes. She was baptized into Christ at Palisade, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: William, Glen, Lester, Elmer and wife, Delores, Charles, Melvin Spears and wife, Arlene, an infant brother; two sisters, Margaret Spears and Laura Belle and husband Ralph Jamison; brothers and sisters-in-law: Bill Kennedy, Gordon Prior, Howard Bridgman, Roberta Stretch and Eunice Stretch.
Mildred is survived by her husband, Leslie Stretch of Hamlet; two sons: Leslie Dwayne Stretch of North Platte, Neb., and Eddie Stretch and fiancée, Michelle, of Imperial; two granddaughters: Michele and Melinda; two brothers: Bob Spears and wife Joan of Boonville, Calif., and Eldon Spears and wife Donna of Arvada, Colo.; sisters-in-law: Vernice Spears and Mable Spears; brothers and sisters-in-law: Lola Kennedy, Ellen Prior, Ethel Bridgman, Lloyd Stretch and Oscar Stretch; relatives and friends.
Services were held Saturday, Sept. 26 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Wauneta with Randy Hayes and Kevin Fink officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, Neb.
Pallbearers were Dennis Kennedy, Kevin Prior, Floyd Stretch, Lynn Spears, Rick King and Ryan King.
