Dorothea Fanning - January 28, 2014
Dorothea Irene Fanning was born May 16, 1930, 17 miles north of Wauneta, in Hayes County, Neb., to Harry and Josie (Teply) Keller. As a young girl she attended Wauneta Public Schools before marring Frank Duane Fanning on Oct. 18, 1947. The couple settled northwest of Wauneta on the Fanning homestead and later moved north of Wauneta on the river bottom, where they made their home for most of their lives.
Dorothea enjoyed farming, operating the tractors and watching the wheat crop grow. She loved gardening, raising flowers and grooming her yard. Grandchildren were her pride and joy. Dorothea attended as many of their sporting events as she could before her health failed.
She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church of Wauneta, the St. John’s Altar Society and a country extension club.
Dorothea passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 28, 2014, at the Sunrise Heights Nursing Home in Wauneta. She was 83 years of age.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; son, DeWayne; granddaughter, Stephanie Fanning; grandsons: Danny Joe Jussel, Dustin and Cody Fanning.
Survivors include daughter, Vicki, and husband, Bill Baker, of Palisade; son, Craig Fanning and wife, Jo, of Wauneta; daughter-in-law, Patti Fanning of Wauneta; sister, Bernice and husband, Delbert Kunnemann, of Billings, Mont.; brother, Dwight Keller and wife, Monica, of Lakewood, Colo.; sister-in-law, Arleen Prince of Kimball, Neb.; five grandchildren: Chris Jussel and wife, Jaime, Norman Fanning and wife, Vanessa, Bo Fanning, Abbie Fanning, Doug Stewart and wife, Amy; seven great grandchildren: Jake Arenz, Kristen Jussel, Logan Jussel, Harvey Fanning, Samantha Stewart, Hope Stewart, and Jacob Stewart.
A rosary was held Jan. 31.
A Funeral Mass was held Feb. 1, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Wauneta with Father Lothar Gilde celebrating. Interment followed at the Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta.
Barb Smith was organist and Dawn Doetker was soloist.
Casketbearers were Norman Fanning, Chris Jussel, Bo Fanning, Jake Arenz, Tony Muths, Doug Stewart.
Honorary casketbearers were Kevin James, Gary Peters, Kerry Kunnemann, Kon Kunnemann and Kim Kunnemann.
A memorial has been established in Dorothea’s memory.
