This year’s Santa Saturday, an annual event sponsored by the Wauneta Chamber of Commerce, was a roaring success with food, prizes and a visitor from the North Pole.

The festivities started with a bake sale at  Mercy Meals that included delicious and beautiful pies and cookies among other baked goods. Laurie Kerchal with Mercy Meals said she was “glad to see the very good crowd.”

Kerchal and Janet Keiser, also with Mercy Meals, both said they appreciate the community support.    Next on the agenda was a free kids’ movie sponsored by the Wauneta Chamber, “Night at the Museum:  Secret of the Tomb.” According to Richard ‘Pudge’ Hamilton, about 45 kids showed up. Volunteers who worked at the theatre included Angie West and Lindsay Acton at the concession booth and Lela Hamilton took tickets. Rod Keiser, Wauneta Chamber of Commerce president, emceed the kids’ drawing with Loretta Raile’s help. Sixteen posters and other prizes, including a marker set donated by Johnston Real Estate, two toy tractors donated by Reiger Equipment and a Cra Z Art set and Husker hat donated by The Wauneta Breeze, were awarded. Then, the excitement moved outdoors where everyone eagerly awaited Santa’s arrival. It was well worth the wait as the Wauneta Vounteer  Fire Department provided escort that included a fire truck with lights flashing and siren blaring. Santa was greeted by a throng of children as he handed out bags of goodies.  Keiser once again took the “stage” in front of the theatre to announce winners of prizes for the grownups. The very first prize drawn was for Santa. Fifty-five prizes were awarded, all donated by businesses to the Wauneta Chamber for distribution to drawing winners.

Santa took his place in the gazebo after the drawing to add to his list of children’s wishes for Christmas and for pictures. Assisting Santa with his workload this year was Dan Rigel who worked behind the scenes to make Santa’s visit a success.

Topping off the busy day was another afternoon of shopping at the Quarter Store, sponsored by the United Methodist Women, at the Senior Center where everything in the store was offered at the bargain price of only a quarter. Free gift wrapping by church volunteers was also available.
