WHS/WPHS grads returned home for the ’05 alumni banquet. There were 155 in attendance with all classes from 1935 - 2005 represented. Present from the Class of 1935 were Jack Lewis of Concord, Calif., and Phillys Person Lyons of McCook.

Jim “Mac” and Patsy McKinney stepped down this spring after 35 years of teaching in Wauneta, Mac as the industrial arts teacher and Patsy, as physical education teacher. Both also served as Bronco coaches. With the school’s buyout offer, they decided to take early retirement. Mac was looking forward to pursuing his “bad habits” like hunting, fishing and carving; Patsy those “put-off” chores around the house and down the road the grandchildren’s activities and sports.

Raymond and Lois Bley and Bob and Carol Sander of Benkelman were married the same day 54 years ago and celebrated their anniversaries together Wednesday, having lunch at a cafe in Benkelman and later visiting in the Sander home.

 

25 years ago this week

May 31, 1990

Area gets much needed rain — 3.47 inches recorded over the weekend with as much as 5.5 inches at the Dan Liebig farm and 3.60 inches at the Dennis Egles’.

Marge Hanna and Ila Widger began their teaching careers at Wauneta Public Schools in 1951. They met as sophomores at the University of Nebraska, later becoming roommates. They each taught a few years, Hanna as business and journalism teacher and Widger in home ec, took time off and then returned to the school room. Hanna took 12 years off and then returned first in the English department, then to the business department for 25 years. Mrs. Widger returned to teaching home ec and art 15 years ago.

Sixteen eighth graders received their certificates of promotion Tuesday evening during education and honors night.

Recognized as 50-year members at the Methodist Church Sunday were June Cox, Sharon Walgren, Myra Grimm and Jack Maddux. They joined the church on Nov. 26, 1939.

 

50 years ago this week

June 3, 1965

Approximately 175 husbands, wives, girl friends, boy friends and guests were in attendance at the WHS alumni banquet. Mrs. Lucille McBride reminisced on the Class of 1915; Mrs. Esther Novacek, Class of 1925; Mrs. Marge Engell, Class of 1935; Paul Kitt, Class of 1945 and Mrs. Janice Heldenbrand, Class of 1955.

A birthday party was held last week for Chase County’s oldest resident, Mrs. Emma Walbridge who was 104 years old. The party was held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Bryce Shopp at Imperial.

 

75 years ago this week

May 29, 1940

Seven scouts and their leaders, Arnold Cowles and Wiley Green, went on a camping trip on the Stinking Water last Wednesday and Thursday. Study, cooking and recreation took up the time.

Mr. and Mrs. Verl Kitt and family and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fortkamp and family enjoyed a family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd DeHart Sunday. The DeHarts plan to leave soon for the coast.

 

100 years ago this week

June 3, 1915

Owing to the heavy rains it caused the Hoke dam east of Champion to break and with all the water the river was up about four feet Friday night.

Mrs. Kanost and Grace left Wednesday for a few month’s visit to Mrs. Kanost’s old home in Virginia.

Mary and Ruth Pribbeno spent Monday night with Sophia and Ella Bischoff.

 

125 years ago this week

June 5, 1890

Will Reinhardt came near having a runaway Saturday but the team was caught by Ed Watson.

W. L. Rutlege and wife and J. L. Beard and wife of Grant have been here at our celebrated falls on a vacation during the week. They informed us that almost the entire town of Grant was coming down here soon for a grand picnic.
