The Hayes County Sheriff’s office, Wauneta Fire Department and Wauneta EMS responded to a one-vehicle rollover accident east of Wauneta last Wednesday, June 11.

Hayes County Sheriff Thomas Dow said the accident occurred at 12:05 p.m. MT/1:05 p.m. CT around mile marker 51 on U.S. Highway 6, one mile east of Hamlet.

Sheriff Dow’s investigation found that Eunice Barnes, 81, of Wauneta was traveling westbound on Highway 6 approximately one mile east of Hamlet.

Reportedly, her 2001 white Ford Ranger’s tires dropped off the shoulder on the right side of the road, which Dow reported is a “good drop.”

Sheriff Dow said it appeared that when Barnes tried to pull the pickup back onto the highway she over corrected which caused her vehicle to spin on the highway and then go through a chain link fence and then through a steel fence gate. It is estimated that the pickup rolled one and one-fourth times before coming to rest.

The Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department and Wauneta EMS responded to the accident.

Barnes was extracted from the vehicle by emergency volunteers, who removed the top of the vehicle, Dow said.

Barnes was transferred to the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial.

Barnes, who was traveling home from McCook, reported she sustained no major injuries other than being “black and blue and yellow with a few minor scrapes.” She said her injuries were, “nothing to write home about.”

When recounting her accident, Barnes said, “There’s no reason I’m alive, except that the good Lord must have a plan for me.”
