Wauneta emergency response teams were on site of a car versus semi truck accident Wednesday morning.

Wauneta EMS and Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department volunteers were quick to arrive on the scene of the accident where a 2002 Mercury Sable driven by Ruth Crow, 77, from Wauneta’s south divide was struck by a 2006 Freightliner semi truck driven by Joseph Swatzell of Monroe, Ga.

Chase County Sheriff Kevin Mueller said Swatzell indicated he and Crow were both east bound on Hwy. 6 prior to the accident.

Swatzell described the incident to Sheriff Mueller by saying Crow was in the left turning lane, waiting to turn onto Tecumseh when instead she turned right toward 346 Avenue. He stated a red pickup was behind Crow in the turning lane.

According to Swatzell, his truck struck Crow’s Sable on the right rear bumper as she turned right.

When Sheriff Mueller spoke to Crow later at the hospital she told him she had been stopped at the stop sign and turned out in front of Swatzell’s truck.

It will likely never be known exactly how the accident played out, however Mueller said his measurements at the scene correspond to Swatzell’s account.

Sheriff Mueller estimated Swatzell’s truck had $2,500 of damage and said Crow’s vehicle was totaled.

Wauneta EMS transported Crow to the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial with minor injuries. Swatzell did not sustain injuries.

Crow was back at her home Wednesday afternoon and stated her only injury was to her neck.

Sheriff Mueller said no citations were issued.
