Though the Wauneta-Palisade football team lost six seniors to graduation, the cupboard is not bare for the Broncos. Fifteen Broncos have reported to defend the team’s State Championship.
Co-head coach Joseph Frecks says he and fellow coach Randy Geier are excited to see how this new group of kids perform.
“We have some talented players that we are trying to put in the best spots and give us the opportunity for success,” said Frecks.
Wes Anderjaska and Hayden Pollmann return for their senior years after playing big roles in 2012.
Anderjaska was first team All-State offense and first team All-West division defense.
Pollmann was second team All-State defense and second team All-West division offense.
Coach Geier said the team can build on their experience and leadership, adding that they have not been disappointed.
Gage Crowell also played valuable minutes during the Broncos’ State Championship run.
Geier said several players are still developing and look to be valuable assets.
Frecks compared the pre-season to putting together a jigsaw puzzle.
“The players have bought into everything we are trying to do,” he said. “They have always given great effort and had great enthusiasm at every practice.”
Despite having so many new players, the coaches plan on sticking with last year’s philosophy: sound, aggressive defense and a running offense.
Frecks and Geier both said the team wants to get better each day, each practice, each week and each game.
The two also agreed about the top teams in Six-Man football.
Both named first week opponent Cody-Kilgore and the team’s final regular season opponent Silver Lake as two of the top teams in the league.
Sioux County and Arthur County are also on W-P’s schedule and all four teams are listed in the Lincoln Journal Star’s Top Five.
The Journal Star also listed Anderjaska as a player to watch as the season begins.
The Broncos will travel to Cody-Kilgore Friday.
