After enjoying warm weather the last week or so, the area experienced a quick change early this week when Winter Storm Walda made her presence known. The storm brought very high winds, snow and a drastic drop in temperatures.
The high winds Monday night downed a 67-foot spruce tree at Kevin and Denise Janicek’s, shown directly below. Luckily, the only thing damaged in the fall was a sidewalk.
Southwest Public Power District crews were out in the rain and hail all night Monday working to restore service. At one point the western two-thirds of SWPPD’s system was out of service for nearly three hours overnight. Overall, approximately 15-20 poles that were either broken off, split or damaged to the point they needed replaced in SWPPD’s area.
Village of Wauneta crews were also kept busy nearly all night working to keep power on and repairing poles due to the storm. The crew replaced one pole broken by the storm and a power line pulled apart in Monday night’s winds. The village reported four homes out of power all night Monday through mid-morning Tuesday.
