Last month, 22 Wauneta-Palisade Public Schools students and four W-P staff members took time out of their days to give back by volunteering at Mercy Meals.
Wednesday, Jan. 23 Teresa Hayes’ fourth hour advanced biology class and Joseph Frecks’ fourth and fifth hour weight lifting classes spent their class time volunteering at the Wauneta-based organization.
Mercy Meals of Southwest Nebraska, a nonprofit run by a volunteer board, allows volunteers to package nourishing food that will be delivered by the Orphan Grain Train to children in need throughout the world.
The food packaged at Mercy Meals is highly nutritious and carries a cost of only $0.10 per serving–which includes food and packaging materials. Funds used to purchase food are donated to the organization.
The food packaged by volunteers such as the W-P group is shipped both internationally to places such as Haiti, India, the former Soviet Union, but is also shipped domestically to places including an Indian reservation in New Mexico.
Randy Geier, W-P superintendent, said, “I felt this was an excellent opportunity for a working educational experience for our students.”
In total, the 22 students and four staff members packaged 4,800 meals during the one and a half hours they spent at Mercy Meals.
“I feel it’s very important to get students out and volunteering in the community,” explained Geier.
Participating students included: Lorenzo Cavenaugh, Gage Crowell, Cody Hicks, James Martin, Christian Valdiviezo, Dakota Washum, Alondra Almanza, Cody Barrett, Paul Behrends and Logan Bischoff.
Weylin Davis, Abbie Fanning, Sydnee Harchelroad, Austin Hicks, Vanessa Kerns, Megan Maddux, Hannah Nordhausen, Charlotte Pitts, Jasmyn Smith, Joseph Sramek, Raven Walters and Landon Jutten also participated in the event.
W-P staff members participating in the event included Randy Geier, Joseph Frecks, Teresa Hayes and Shelby Cox.
