The drought topped the news in 2002. Moisture for 2002 totaled only 9.29 inches with widespread crop failure in dryland fields. Fires also made news with the loss of the contents of an auto body shop and 4,500 acres of grass, trees and fence lines near Hamlet which claimed the life of a Palisade firefighter.
Tim and Cindy McKillip were surprised at a 25th anniversary celebration held in their honor at the Hamlet Union Church Friday evening.
Betty Carey, Elaine Peterson and Lavona Nelson were among those from Southwest Nebraska who attended a Gaither Holiday Music Program in Omaha Dec. 12.
Doris Ough spent Christmas week with Bill and Kay Ough and Harley at Chino Valley, Ariz.
Members of the Wine family families were Christmas Day guests of Marlin and Lois Wine for a cooperative dinner.
Richard and Marcia Comly and Rod Keiser arrived Dec. 25 to spend time with Elmer and Edna Keiser. Supper guests that evening were Wilma and Lynn Keiser and Leta Brunkhorst.
Jack and Verna Sandman attended the CFO Church Sunday to hear the report of the mission team that had returned from Belize. Janice, Aric and Chad Allen were part of the team. A carry-in dinner followed the service.

Chris Hoff of Bozeman, Mont., spent the Christmas holiday with parents, Clyde and Lois Hoff. They enjoyed Christmas breakfast at the home of Myrtle Hoff who hosted breakfast for 15 family members.
Mr. and Mrs. Tony Cribelli spent a week in Phoenix, Ariz., and attended the Fiesta Bowl game.
Connie and Les Linscott of Gainesville, Fla., were holiday guests of Bill and Mabel Dicke. They also visited her brother, Bill and Laurie Dicke and family in McCook and enjoyed a ski trip to Colorado Springs with Les’ brother and sister and families.
Those enjoying dinner with Opal Kerchal at Heritage Home Jan. 1 in honor of her 92nd birthday were Keith and Nona Kerchal, Virgil and Frances Kerchal, Leonard and Frona Kerchal, Ramona Nordhausen and Eva Polly.
Helen Rousey was honored on her 80th birthday when her family and Hamlet Union Church families held a carry-in dinner following services with an house hosted by her family from 2-4 o’clock.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Harchelroad travelled to Las Cruces, N.M., on the 26th where they visited her sister, the Neil Daileys, going on to Phoenix to attend the Fiesta Bowl game. Brian who had gone with the Nebraska team returned home with them.
Floyd and Margaret Greeley were honored on their 50th anniversary on Sunday, Dec. 27 with family and friends present. They were married on Christmas Day in 1937.

Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Wright were honored on their 50th anniversary at their home with family and friends calling throughout the day. The Wrights were married on New Year’s Day in 1913.
Ron Prior was named the winner of the Regent’s Scholarship to the University of Nebraska.
Mrs. Bonnie Hanna was installed as Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge No. 124 Tuesday evening at an installation ceremony.
Richard Fox left a week ago Thursday for the service and is stationed at Lackland AFB in Texas.
Mrs. C. R. Carlson and Mrs. Russell Bodeman were co-hostesses at a pre-New Year coffee in the Bodeman home Monday, Dec. 31 with a large attendance reported.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sandman and Vearl McBride called at the Lee Hunt home Sunday afternoon to wish Mrs. Hunt “happy birthday.” They enjoyed a cake baked by Mrs. Sandman.
S/Sgt. and Mrs. Loren Brown, Lorna and Lyle, are visiting with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Silvers and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Brown, on a 30-day leave after a tour of duty of over three years in Japan.
Marilyn Priest entertained Sunday in honor of her mother’s birthday. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Rousey and Rose Ruettimann.

Saturday, Jan. 8, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Steinbeck observed their silver wedding. Mr. Steinbeck was recovering from an illness so no celebration was planned. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nordhausen, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Nordhausen and Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Nordhausen visited them during the day.
A surprise was tendered Henry Bischoff Monday evening, the occasion was his birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nordhausen and family and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Denker and family were Sunday guests at the Henry Haarberg home. In the afternoon the young people all went to Enders to skate on the Grosbach lake.
The Stock families held their monthly get-together at the home of Chester Stock last Sunday.

The Merry Makers met at Ashby Morrison’s last Friday night a fine time was reported. Pie, pickles and coffee were served.
Mrs. Phil and Mrs. Wm. Williams and their children returned home Tuesday from a trip to Iowa. Phil’s boys brought him a cattle dog in a cigar box.
