The Wauneta-Palisade speech team was in top form at districts last week. The Broncos took 18 individual and group entrants to the contest and 11 brought home medals.
The team took third place overall at the competition, missing second place by one point. Wallace took first with 120 points, Callaway placed second with 98 points and Wauneta-Palisade made third place with 97 points.
Three of the 11 Bronco medal winners will continue on to state. Christi Christner, a freshman, took first place at districts in serious prose. Brett Klima took third in persuasive. Wes Anderjaska, Hayden Pollmann, Jacob Maris, Weylin Davis and Connor Kayton took third for their self-authored oral interpretation of drama presentation titled “The Great Squatch Hunt.”
Christner, Klima and the five-man team will represent W-P at state in Kearney on March 22 and 23.
At the D2-5 district competition in North Platte the Broncos competed against seven other schools: South Platte, Hayes Center, Wallace, Medicine Valley, Eustis-Farnam, McPherson County and Callaway.
At districts each school is allowed to bring two entries for each of the nine events. Christner and Cassidy Rathe competed in the serious prose category. Rathe was a district medal winner, placing fifth. Christner’s first place medal earned her right to compete in the state competition.
Klima and Jasmyn Smith represented the Broncos in the persuasive category. Both placed well with Klima’s third place medal and Smith’s fourth place medal. Klima will progress to state.
The Broncos took third and fourth medals in the oral interpretation of drama category as well. Christner, Landon Jutten, Rathe, Smith and Logan Bischoff took fourth with their performance of “The Great Easter Egg Hunt.” Anderjaska, Pollmann, Maris, Davis and Kayton will take their third place medal winning performance on to state.
Klima and Tayler Nordhausen performed well in the informative category, earning fourth and fifth place medals.
Anderjaska and T. Nordhausen represented the Broncos in the poetry category and took home fifth and sixth place medals.
Landon Jutten and Donald Hunt entered the entertainment category. Jutten earned a sixth place medal for his effort.
Hannah Nordhausen and Hayden Pollman competed in the extemporaneous category but were unable to capture medals.
The duet category was another heartbreaker for the W-P team. Weylin Davis and Tailor Lee competed as did Sydnee Harchelroad and H. Nordhausen but neither team was able to secure a medal earning rank.
Broncos made an attempt for medals in the humorous prose category as well. Donald Hunt and Dawn Pinkal competed but were unable to capture a medal in the district competition.
