Abbie Fanning competes at a track meet last season.
Jonee Maris works hard to clear the high jump.
Jonee Maris and Abbie Fanning, both of Wauneta- Palisade High School, have been chosen to compete in the Down Under West Central Conference Track and Field competition in July.
Maris is a senior at Wauneta-Palisade High School, while Fanning is a sophomore at W-P.
Both girls had to go through a selection process and by their dedication and hard work both were chosen to compete this year.
Down Under Sports was founded in 1989 by a man named George O’Scanlon. From New Zealand O’Scanlon fell in love with athletics especially American football. He wanted to promote football not just in New Zealand but also in Australia. He then started the Down Under Bowl which soon led to the Down Under Hoops Classic and the Down Under International games.
The Down Under Sports program is meant to use the “common language of sports to bridge the continents and provide a forum for athletes from around the globe to compete head to head in the sport they love,” as stated in the press release from Down Under Sports.
Maris and Fanning will be raising money for their trip to the land Down Under.
Sponsorship letters will be sent to local businesses and fund-raisers are being planned to enable both girls to participate this summer.
