Tommy’s Sports Club, under new owners Tom and Katie Weigel, opened this week after an extensive renovation. For the present they will be open on a limited schedule until after the first of the year with a limited menu.
The gift of literacy was celebrated at the Wauneta Attendance Center as students and teachers joined together for “Read for 2002” activities. Kindergarten thru fourth grade met in the grade school hallway at noon on Friday for 2002 seconds of reading. Wauneta cheerleaders, Faith Jussel, Katrina Nolan, Hope Jussel and Stacy Yost, took turns reading to the group.
The children and grandchildren of Reinhold Gloy were present over the weekend to help celebrate his 90th birthday. The group gathered at the Troy and Evelyn Skelton home Friday, had a soup supper at the Gloy home Saturday, attended church Sunday at Redeemer Lutheran Church with dinner at the Senior Center followed by an open house in the afternoon.
Lois Bley joined Joyce Roesener, Jean Kirwan, Jennette Heckenlively and Peg Ekart at the M & M Cafe in Imperial for a surprise coffee and rolls for her sister, Beulah Harris.
Bob and Marge Hanna, Mike Hanna, Robin Miskey, Dave and Cathy Hanna and sons and Nancy and Doug Munderloh met in Bird City, Kan., Saturday evening for dinner to observe December birthdays.
Kip and Kay Polly and girls and Eunice Bodeman were Sunday guests of Karl and Judy Polly. The girls helped decorate the Christmas tree.
Aaron Keiser took third place honors in the District Voice of Democracy competition with Seth Alberts placing second and Cody Noble, third, on the local level.

Stockholders of the Wauneta Co-op Oil voted against merging their co-op and the Hayes Center Co-op with the Farmers Cooperative Exchange in Wauneta. A two-thirds vote was required by both co-ops with the Hayes Center Co-op stockholders approving the merger and Wauneta Co-op Oil stockholders falling short by nine votes.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Baney attended a presentation by Dr. Samuel Doctorian who spoke aided with a video tape on a “Tour of the Holy Land” at the Friends Church in Benkelman. Those present had taken the Holy Land tour.
Sunday Henry and Leta Brunkhorst, Joe and Linda Rietsch and Elmer and Edna Keiser ate dinner in Imperial in honor of the Brunkhorsts’ 44th anniversary.
Lloyd and Kathy Kerchal visited parents Keith and Nona Kerchal Saturday on their return to North Platte following a ski trip to Dillon, Colo. Others on the trip were Kevin and Laurie Kerchal, Loren and Nancy Wach and Tim and Cindy McKillip.

To date more than 62 blankets have been collected at the Methodist Church. A plea for blankets was made by the Church World Service and endorsed by Methodist Pastor Art Ernst. The blankets will be shipped to Denver and then sent to various parts of the world. The blanket program was part of their Christmas observance.
Chamber’s $5 gift certificate winners: Suzanne Salyer, W.B. Buffington, Ed Voda, Rodney Ough, Carol Stock, Jim McBride, Norma Fortkamp, Mike Ough, Beverly Polly and Rose Lauenroth.
An estimated 600 persons were guests of the Farmers Co-op Exchange in Wauneta Tuesday during the annual John Deere Day. This was the largest crowd yet, according to Manager Alvin Knepper.
S/Sgt. and Mrs. Leo Porter and children of Lincoln are visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Porter, and grandmother, Mrs. Pearl Landmark.
Jim Carlson of the Naval Hospital in Long Beach, Calif., and Miss Mary Margaret Fraser of Long Beach arrived to spend the holidays with Dr. and Mrs. C. Rob’t Carlson.
Pfc. Virgil Doetker arrived home Sunday from Fort Sill, Okla., to spend a 10-day leave with parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Doetker. Sunday dinner guests of the Doetkers were Mrs. Lizzie Busking and William.
Miss Verdonna Colby was chosen to be the Madonna in the Christmas pageant at Colorado Women’s College in Denver. The part of the Madonna is traditionally reserved for outstanding students at CWC.

According to the McCook Gazette, Wauneta placed two on the selection of an all-star football team - Buffington at end and Kitt at halfback.
The box social at the Prairie Rose school house brought in $66.70 and will be used to buy a piano for the school.
Mr. and Mrs. Bud Johnston and family and Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bischoff and Richard were guests at a turkey dinner at the Gene Stewart home last Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harrison and daughter Wilma spent Sunday at the Ed Miles home.
Mr. and Mrs. John Donze and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ellison called at the Fern Nichols home Monday evening.
100 years ago this week
December 21, 1911
A sleet storm Sunday night. A snow storm set in Tuesday evening and Wednesday bringing 8 to 12 inches of snow.
Nearly all the men in the Calvert neighborhood were fixing telephone wires and posts Monday that were broken in the heavy sleet Sunday night.
The young people of the German-Lutheran church met Wed. and Fri. evenings last week to practice for the Christmas entertainment.
C. E Harte and wife visited at Art Nesmith’s Wed. C. E helped butcher and the Mrs. helped in the house. Geo. Smith and Archer Morrison also helped butcher.
