The Wauneta Breeze

Monday night the Wauneta-Palisade volleyball team travelled to Grant to start dubdistrict D2-10 play against a familiar team, the Hayes Center Cardinals, losing 20-25, 20-25, 22-25.

Emma Skelton started WP off with the set’s first point, but the match was pretty much a copy of Friday’s St. Pat’s matches. The Lady Broncos kept things close but couldn’t withstand the front line offense of the Cardinal’s Haley Tyan, Annie Deaver, and Halsie Large.

The Lady Broncos led most of the third set, with Brooklyn Nordhausen, Brianna Einspahr and Cassidy Rathe picking up good kills, before falling behind.

Tailor Lee assisted with some over the net kills also.

Abbie Fanning and Emma Skelton were steady in their digs and sets.

With the loss the Lady Broncos close their 2011 campaign with a 7-17 record. Hayes Center moves to 13-14 on the season as they advance in subdistrict play.

St. Pat’s, Wallace sweep Broncos

Prior to subdistricts, the Lady Broncos travelled to Wallace and North Platte last week for their last regular season games of the year, dropping both contests in straight sets.

Wallace downed the Broncos 18-25, 16-25, 14-25 on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Friday night North Platte St. Pat’s dominated the Broncs as they swept WP in three straight sets.

With a record of 22-7, the Lady Irish are one of the top teams in Class C2. They defeated Southwest in the championship match of the C2-11 subdistrict final to advance to C2-District 6 finals against Perkins County Friday at Sutherland.

The Lady Broncos were no match with St. Pat’s front line of height and experience, falling in straight sets 14-25, 19-25 and 13-25.

During the first set the Lady Irish had WP back on their heels, unable to stop the Irish’s Shalby Allbery.

The second set started with the Broncos getting the first point, then the Broncs’ defense gave up seven straight points, forcing Wauneta-Palisade to call time out. After the time out W/P kept things close with Tailor “The Hammer” Lee, Jonee Maris, Cassidy Rathe matching kills and Emma Skelton consistently digging hard serves.

The third set was all St. Pat’s and the Broncos were unable to overcome their size and speed.

Though they were defeated in the subdistrict final, Maywood rallied on Monday night to defeat the D2-10 No. 1 seeded Wallace 3-2. The Tigers entered subdistricts as the No. 4 seed with a 6-21 record and had to first defeat Medicine Valley in a bunny bracket match-up before going head-to-head with Wallace.
