The running game of the Eustis-Farnam Knights vs. the passing game of the Wauneta-Palisade Broncos was evident Friday night.

Bronco Reese West took the opening kick off for 13 yards. After three consecutive runs by Connor Kayton, Bo Fanning and Reese West, Kayton lofted a 33-yard pass to Logan Bischoff for the Broncos’ first touchdown. The points after run was good by Kayton to put W/P up 8-0 with less than two minutes into the first quarter.

The Broncos kicked off to Eustis-Farnam who wasted no time in putting their running game in gear.

The Knights’ front line of 6’5” 250 lb. center Morgan Smith, 6’1” 240 lb. Shane Robbins and 6’1” 225 lb. Jared Rupp was too much for the Broncos’ under-sized line. Runs by the Knights’ Wetovick and Koch and a 15-yard run by quarterback Hunter Ringenberg put the Knights in the end zone for the TD. The PAT run by scat back Aron Hueftle knotted the score at 8-8 with less than five and a half minutes gone in the first quarter.

After a series of penalties and good defense by both teams, Eustis-Farnam scored their second touchdown with strong running with 10 seconds left in the first quarter. The PAT pass was good giving the Knights a 16-8 first quarter lead.

The second quarter started with the Broncos getting flagged for cut block and holding calls forcing WP’s Kayton to punt. Good run blocking by the Knights and a 26-yard touchdown pass and a PAT put the Broncos down 24-8.

The Broncos took the kick off marching down field when Kayton being rushed was intercepted by the Knights Dustin Koch. The Broncos stepped up, forcing the Knights to pass when freshman Tyler Knotts picked off a Wetovick pass and scrambled 36 yards for a Bronco TD. This was the Broncos first intercept for a touchdown this season. The PAT failed, putting the Broncos 14, Knights 24.

WP’s Bischoff’s kickoff went into the end zone for a touch back. The next set of series for both teams was good-old Friday night football. Hard hitting by the Broncos put Eustis-Farnam at fourth and two with two minutes, thirty-nine seconds remaining in the first half when the Knights quarterback misplayed the ball and was tackled by Bischoff and Fanning. The Broncos took over the ball on downs. A Kayton pass to Bischoff was good for 25 yards and a late hit penalty put the Broncos at first and 10 at the Knights’ 26-yard line. Kayton’s passes to Bischoff and Wes Anderjaska put the Knights back on their heels and Coach Bernhardt kept the passing game going with Hayden Pollmann pulling down a high pass from Kayton in the end zone for a Bronco TD.

The PAT run by Kayton was good for a W/P 22 - EF 24 ball game with the second quarter ending.

The third quarter started with the Broncos kicking off and WP’s defense holding Eustis-Farnam on a fourth and one, but then gave the ball back over on a pass interception. The Knights wasted no time scoring on a 35-yard pass and the PAT run was also good, making a 22-32 game in favor of the Knights.

Bronco Bo Fanning took the kick off on the two-yard line and ran over five defenders and was downed at their own 34-yard line. The Broncos misplayed the hand-off which put them at second and 12. Kayton found West for a 45-yard touchdown. The PAT was good putting the score at 30-32.

Both teams traded points with running and passing plays with the third quarter ending at the Broncos 38, Knights 46.

The fourth quarter started with both teams trading field positions. The Broncos scored a touchdown on a Kayton to Bischoff pass. The PAT was good, knotting the score at 46-46.

The Knights took the W/P kick off and moved the ball on runs by Wetovick, Hueftle, and Kock with Wetovick going 10 yards for the TD. The conversion run was good for a 46-54 ball game.

The Knights kicked off with three minutes, thirty-two seconds left in the ball game. The Broncos’ passing game of Kayton to Fanning and Pollmann and a 30-yard TD pass to West put the ball in the end zone but the PAT pass was knocked away with the score now at Broncos 52, Knights 54. The Broncos tried an on-side kick but the Knights covered the ball and ran out the field clock with the Broncos coming up two points short.

Knights Coach Paul Pistulka was quoted “that didn’t look like two 0 – 6 teams out there tonight.”

Wauneta/Palisade had 327 yards passing and 427 total yards offense. Eustis-Farnam had 301 rushing yards and 477 total yards offense.

The Broncos close out the season Thursday (today), Oct. 20 at home with game time set for at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT with Medicine Valley.
