Traveling to Haxtun, Colo., Friday to play a team that beat them last year 36-8, the Wauneta-Palisade Broncos found a foe just as tough as last year, falling to the Haxtun Bulldogs 49-0.

The Broncs started the game by kicking off to Haxtun. Playing good nose-to-nose football, the first defensive series was something the Broncos will have to build on.

However, they then struggled to gain yardage on offense. Conner Kayton punted to the Bulldogs and momentum went back and forth. With 3:30 left in the first quarter, Haxtun scored on a 5-yard pass and kicked the extra point, putting the Bulldogs up 7-0.

After taking the kickoff, W/P mistakes continued through the next series. The lack of up-front experience on both offense and defense put the Broncos down 14-0 after another Bulldog score.

The Broncs misfired again after the kickoff, setting up more points for the Bulldogs. Four downs after taking over, they got back on the board with a 20-yard field goal by the Bulldog’s Karsten Anderson. This gave Haxtun a comfortable 17-0 lead as the first half wound down.

The second half started with Haxtun kicking off to W/P. After a bad snap and no gain on running plays, Connor Kayton punted for 33 yards. Then flood gates opened. The Broncos got flagged for pass interference which set Haxtun up for their next score—a 25-yard TD run. The extra point kick was no good, bringing the score to 23-0.

After the Bulldog kick off, the Broncos misplayed a high snap for a 15-yard loss. Nothing seemed to be going the Broncs’ way as Logan Bischoff’s ensuing punt was partially blocked. This gave Haxtun excellent field position and they scored a 30-yard TD. A failed Bulldog PAT kick left the score at 29-0.

After another Haxtun kick off, Kayton hit Bischoff on a pass, good for six yards. Another breakdown on the offensive line allowed the Bulldogs to drop Kayton for an eight-yard loss. Blocked punts and dropped passes ended the third quarter.

Three minutes into the fourth quarter, Haxtun scored on a 27-yard run and added the PAT kick for a 36-0 lead.

After Haxtun kicked off for a touchback, the bright spot for the Broncos had Bo Fanning running up the middle of the Haxtun line on two consecutive runs for good yardage. Blocking broke down again with the Broncos giving the ball back to the Bulldogs who put up a quick TD and kick to make the score 43-0.

The Bulldogs’ bite of the night was a blocked punt at the Bronco 5-yard line with Haxtun recovering it in the end zone for another touchdown. The game ended 49-0.

The Broncos will play host to Hayes Center here Friday night, Sept. 23. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. MT / 7:30 p.m. CT.
