New fair event this year is ranch rodeo

New at the Chase County Fair this year will be a Ranch Rodeo, scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 16. The rodeo will begin at 5 p.m. in the fair arena.

Organizer Chris Krausnick said the rodeo consists of four events: trailer loading, sorting/penning, doctoring (head, heel and chalk calf) and a double muggin’, which is a calf roping.

Competition will be limited to the first 15 teams that sign up. Teams will consist of four people, of any age.

The entry fee is $200, and cash prizes will be awarded.

Krausnick said contestants need to provide their own horses.

Registration is just before the event begins.

Sponsors are Brophy Electric, Edward D. Jones, Top Hat LLC and Imperial NAPA.

Squirrel season starts this week

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says the state’s squirrel hunting season opens Aug. 1 and runs through Jan. 31. The daily bag limit is seven squirrels, and the possession limit is 28. The commission experts say squirrels dine primarily on the nuts of oaks, hickories and walnuts. They eat other nuts and fruit when preferred foods are not available. Hunting permits can be bought online at
