Nebraska’s statewide report card was released last week and the Wauneta-Palisade School District was among those with students showing strong proficiency in reading, writing, math and science.
In the areas of reading and math, WP was listed among the state’s schools receiving exemplary ratings on assessment quality and student performance.
Since state standards were first established, WP students have shown continued improvement, often with entire grade levels meeting or exceeding the standards established by the state.
The State of the Schools Report — available online at — provides student achievement results for the state as well as for individual school districts. Nebraska’s annual report on public schools once again shows more of the state’s students are meeting or exceeding state reading and mathematics standards, indicating that 90 percent of all Nebraska students are meeting or exceeding reading and math standards.
Science was tested for the first time last year, creating a baseline from which educators will measure performance and improvement in the coming years.
Among last year’s fourth graders at WP, 100 percent met or exceeded state requirements, matching results from the previous year and showing a 5.59 percent improvement since standards were administered during the 2002-03 school year.
Among last year’s eighth graders, 88.89 percent tested proficient, compared to 89.45 percent testing proficient five years earlier.
Last year’s 11th graders showed proficiency among 85 percent of the class, up from 75.9 in 2002-03.

In writing, 92.31 percent of WP’s fourth graders were proficient, up from 68.75 percent in 2003-04; 94.12 percent of eighth graders were proficient, compared to 58.82 percent four years ago; 88.24 percent of 11th graders were proficient, compared to 81.25 percent in 2003-04.

Among WP’s fourth graders, 100 percent were proficienct, consistent with results over the past four years. Math testing last year showed 88.89 percent of eighth grade students and 90 percent of 11th grade students at WP proficient.

One hundred percent of WP’s fifth grade students met or exceeded state standards in science which were tested for the first time during the 2007-08 school year. Among last year’s eighth graders 88.89 percent tested proficient in science as did 85 percent of last year’s 11th graders.
