With another top-three showing last week, the Hitchcock County/Wauneta-Palisade wrestling squad heads into their holiday break feeling pretty good about their results so far.
Head coach Rich Wilson, his squad down two wrestlers to injuries—Trent Cook has a hurt shoulder and Devin Simon has a broken hand—was pleased with his team’s third-place finish at Cambridge last week.
“If we’d had those two on the mats last week, there’s no doubt we would have been at least second place at Cambridge,” Wilson said.
JR Leahy, a Hitchcock County athlete for the joint wrestling team, took first place at the meet in the 135-pound class. He is the son of assistant coach John Leahy.
“JR was very aggressive and did an excellent job,” Wilson said. “He’s a great listener and learns from each match. He had a great day.”
The third-place finish didn’t come without a little disappointment for the squad. Adam Simpson, the only undefeated member of the team up to that point, finished second in the 215-pound weight class.
“Adam’s loss was not a fluke loss,” Wilson explained. “He lost a great match to another great wrestler. Any loss is rough, but he learned lessons from it, so that’s good.”
James Rundel also finished second for the joint wrestling program, his win coming in the 130-pound division.
“James wasn’t feeling good,” Wilson said of the Hitchcock County athlete. “His knee was bothering him pretty bad. We toyed with the idea of not wrestling him, but sometimes you have to wrestle with a little hurt. He did a great job considering.”
Marcos Ramirez, Cody Fanning and Will Anderjaska also had good showings for the program.
Ramirez took third place in the 112-pound division,
Fanning placed third in the 140-pound class and Anderjaska was fourth out of the 145-pounders at the meet.
“We’re really looking forward to our after-holiday meets,” Wilson said of upcoming action. “By then we’ll be injury-free and looking to take a first-place finish.”
The Broncos head to Benkelman for the Dundy County-Stratton Invitational on Saturday, December 10.
