Broncos qualify for state track meet in seven events

Six Wauneta-Palisade athletes have qualified for the Nebraska State Track Championship following the district track meet Wednesday, May 10, in Bertrand.
Faith Simpson had a big day for the Broncos, winning the 100 meter hurdles, high jump, discus and finishing second in the shot put.
Cash Yearous earned a repeat of his berth in the state meet with a district championship in the 1,600 meter run. Yearous won the event by a full second.
Greg Gaston opened the meet with a win in the high jump. Gaston cleared 6’1”.
Also qualifying for state was the boys’ 3,200 meter relay. The group of Ben Anderjaska, Joel Maris, Brody Nordhausen and Yearous knocked another five seconds of its personal best during the win.
Just missing out on a trip to state was Anderjaska with a third place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:08.60. Anderjaska led for much of the race, but couldn’t hold on for the win. First-place finisher Riley Johnson of Bertrand and Yordi Gutierrez Arapahoe finished with matching times in the 800, 2:07.30. Joel Maris placed fifth in the event.
The top two third place finishes from districts advanced to state. Anderjaska’s time was good enough to win three other districts, but was the third fasts third overall.
