Wauneta-Palisade opens season with three wins

The Wauneta-Palisade volleyball team kicked its season off with a bang Aug. 29, beating Dundy County-Stratton in five sets. WP kept up its winning ways with sweeps of Stapleton and Paxton Thursday.
The Broncos had its opening night match circled on the calendar.
WP Head Coach Terra Higgins said DCS match would be a great game to gauge where the Broncos were as a team.
WP had its hands full early in the match. The teams traded points and kept the game close to 10-10.
The Broncos took off from there, outscoring DCS 15-4 down the stretch to win the first set 25-14.
The Tigers turned the tables in the second set. WP had an 11-9 advantage before DCS went on a run. WP fell in the set 15-25.
Moving back to the south court in the DCS gym, WP looked like it would run away with the third set. The Broncos turned an 8-8 tie into a 19-12 lead. DCS wasn’t done, however, closing the gap to 23-21. WP scored the final two points to win 25-21.
DCS didn’t let WP open up a large lead in the fourth set. The back-and-forth game was tied at 17 before WP took a 20-17 lead. DCS battled back to tie the game at 23. DCS thought it had the game won 26-24 but the referees changed their minds on a kill, calling a lift instead.
WP used the call to turn the tables and had match point at 27-26. The Broncos couldn’t shake DCS, losing the set to the Tigers 27-29.
