Lady Broncos win subdistrict, will face Falls City Sacred Heart in districts
With two subdistrict wins in North Platte last week, the Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team advanced to the district finals.
“I was really proud of our sub district efforts in both games,” WP Head Coach Matt Cox said. After a rough loss to end the regular season, he said game management was key in both subdistrict wins.
“Last Saturday we blew a seven point lead with four minutes left in the fourth quarter on our home floor. I didn’t like how that felt, and it’s certainly not the situation that you want to go into sub-district thinking about, but it was clear we learned from it,” he said. “We talked about it going into the fourth quarter of both sub games, and the girls did a great job of defending and rebounding in the fourth quarter and controlling the clock with out half court offense.”
WP opened the tournament with a 10-point win over Brady.
Both teams shot the ball well early in the game. The Broncos held a 7-4 lead with three minutes gone in the game. But both teams cooled off over the middle of the quarter. Two baskets gave the Eagles a 7-8 lead, before Chloe Stehno, Michaela Dukes, Payton Yearous and Haylee Sandman contributed to a seven-point run by the Broncos.
The second quarter played out in similar fashion. WP saw its lead shrink to two points twice, but finished the half with a 6-1 run to maintain its advantage. WP led 24-17 at halftime.
Brady scored the first seven points of the second half to tie the game at 24. A three pointer by Alexa Sandman jump started the Broncos. Dukes quickly pulled down a rebound and scored and H. Sandman took advantage of an Eagles’ turnover with a layup. Three points by Brady made the score 33-27, but a late basket by Cali Cox kept the advantage at eight points, 35-27, heading into the fourth quarter.
