Lady Broncos’ season ends against Wallace in subdistrict finals

The Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team’s season ended Thursday night with a loss to Wallace in the subdistrict finals at Cambridge.
WP opened subdistrict Feb. 14 with a win over Eustis-Farnam.
The Broncos outscored Eustis-Farnam 8-4 in the first quarter thanks to six points by Faith Simpson.
Michaela Dukes got into the act in the second quarter, scoring four points to got with six more from Simpson.
WP shot well from free throw line, making all six first half attempts and finishing the game 14-16.
“We got started really slow, mostly because of our 2-3 defense,” WP coach Matt Cox said. “We committed some silly fouls out of it in the first half.”
The Broncos busted open the game in the second half. Simpson put 15 points on the board to help increase a 20-17 halftime lead to 40-30.
Five points from Monique Gooden helped seal the 54-40 win.
Simpson led WP with 31 points, 17 rebounds, five steals and two assists.
Dukes, Gooden and Skow each scored seven points.
Natalie Ramirez had two assists and Reagan Skow four steals.
“After we got rid of some nerves, the second half was much better,” Cox said. “We kept our turnovers in check and ran some long, grinding possessions in our half-court offense. We earned one more game on Thursday and things will be much more challenging.”
The statement couldn’t have been more true.
The wheels fell off the wagon early in the Broncos’ subdistrict finals game against Wallace.
“We dug ourselves a hole early on in the game,” Cox said. “We missed some early layups, had some turnovers and things went south pretty quick after that.”
