Broncos fall at home to DCS, prepare for Hitchcock County and SW

Though the Broncos battled hard, the Wauneta-Palisade basketball teams lost games to Dundy County-Stratton Saturday.
The girls’ game started off the evening. WP fell behind 0-7 to start the game, but after finding its footing tied the game at seven points each. Zoey Boos and Alexa Sandman each put back offensive rebounds in the run. A. Sandman’s second basket made the game even. The hot-shooting Tigers knocked in five points over the final 90 seconds to take a five-point advantage into the second quarter.
WP narrowed the gap to four points on a Cali Cox basket, but DCS scored 10 points on its next four possessions to open its lead. A Michaela Dukes basket and free throws by Boos  and Faith Lemon slowed the bleeding until back-to-back treys by the Tigers combined with a putback off an offensive rebound kept DCS in control. WP closed the half with a basket by C. Cox and three-pointer from Lemon.
Baskets by Dukes and A. Sandman started the half off right for WP. C. Cox grabbed a missed free throw and scored to narrow the gap to single digits, 25-34. Unfortunately, WP would go scoreless for the next four minutes, allowing DCS to increase the lead to 16 points, before Lemon knocked in a three-pointer. C. Cox scored five points over the final two minutes of the third quarter, leaving WP trailing 33-48.
DCS put its foot down in the fourth quarter, scoring the first 12 points, and holding WP to baskets by Payton Yearous and A. Sandman over the game’s final eight minutes. WP fell to 2-8 with the 40-68 loss.
