Broncos continue to roll, beat Loomis 63-20, now 4-3
The Wauneta-Palisade football team ran its winning streak to three games with a 63-20 win over Loomis Friday night.
WP started the game off with a bang. The Bronco defense moved Loomis backwards on the first three plays of the game, then blocked the Loomis punt. Austen Rozelle recovered the block and scored, putting WP ahead 7-0 a minute and a half into the game.
WP’s defense picked up where it left off. The Broncos quickly forced a fumble and scored three plays later. By the 9:00 mark of the first quarter, WP led 14-0.
Following a Loomis punt on its third possession, WP marched down the field with the help of a circus catch by Cash Yearous.
Rozelle scored once more to put WP ahead 20-0.
“The boys played great in the first quarter,” WP Co-Head Coach Randy Geier said.
“We had a little let down in the second quarter.”
That let down came in the form of a Loomis touchdown following a WP fumble.
The Broncos responded with a seven-yard touchdown run by Dennis Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh looked like he would be stopped short of the end zone, but dragged Loomis defenders over the goal line.
Leading 26-6, WP couldn’t stop Loomis on the ensuing possession. The Wolves drove down the field and cut WP’s lead to 26-14 with one minute left in the first half.
Both teams struggled on the first possessions of the third quarter. A Loomis fumble set WP up on the Wolves 19-yard line. Ty Duvel scored three plays later. It was the only score of the quarter.
WP more than made up for the low scoring quarter in the final stanza.
