Zion Lutheran Church celebrates 100th anniversary with Turkey Trot

The Zion Lutheran Church of Imperial has been scheduling special events each month since January to celebrate their 100th year anniversary.
November’s event was a Turkey Trot on Saturday morning, beginning and ending at the church.
“This was the first event of this kind we have planned, and we thought it was fitting since Thanksgiving is coming up,” said Rev. David Kahle, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church.
The event was sponsored by the church’s committee for the 100th anniversary.
Mary Haarberg, race coordinator, said there were total of 42 participants in the two Turkey Trot races with many decked out in Thanksgiving-theme garb.
“The costumes were amazing and very creative,” she said.
First place in the costume competition was Dustin Holmes’ “turkey on wheels.” Holmes received a turkey.
Second place in the costume division was the team of Ashli Maris and Julie Sparrow as “Thanksgiving Indians.”
Shelley Mitchell, Becky Bernard and Desiree Loeffler won third as the “Super Foods Turkeys.” Each participant in second and third place received cornish hens.
