Wauneta village board prepares to rename nursing home
The Village of Wauneta Board took the first step toward changing the name of the nursing home at last week’s village board meeting.
The Village was contacted earlier this year by a lawyer from Washington, D.C. who represents Sunrise Senior Living, LLC. The letter demanded the Village stop using the name “Sunrise” in relation to the provision of long-term care services.
The corporation runs facilities throughout the United States, United Kingdom and Canada offering services in long term care, skilled nursing, independent living and Alzheimer’s care.
At April meetings, the village board determined their choices were to change the name of Sunrise Heights of Wauneta or litigate with the corporation.
Last week, the board approved a motion authorizing nursing home administration to work with Richard P. Nelson of Erickson/Sederstrom Attorneys at Law of Lincoln to officially change the facility’s name to Wauneta Care and Therapy Center.
It was noted the new name allows for a better description of all the range of services provided at the nursing home which include long-term and convalescent care as well as many therapy services available to the public.
Sunrise Heights of Wauneta is currently registered by the village as a trade name with the Secretary of the State. The facility’s license with the state as a care facility is also held under the name. It is also enrolled as a Medicaid and Medicare provider under the name.
In a memo to the board, Nelson stated the process of changing the name with regulatory agencies is relatively straightforward. The name change will also require many other logistical considerations once an effective date for the change is identified.
Board members anticipate the name change will happen sometime before the end of 2017.
