Village of Wauneta purchased nursing home five years ago

Five years ago, the community of Wauneta rallied to save an important facet of the community—the nursing home.
The Village of Wauneta decided to purchase the nursing home when Vetter Health Services announced they would cease operation after June of 2012.
The purchase by the Village from Vetter Health Services came into effect July 1, 2012.
A total of $890,525 was raised for the purchase and initial operation expenses.
According to the clerk’s report at the June 2012 Village board meeting, $240,525 was contributed by both individual and corporate local and local-at-heart donors, $150,000 of Village of Wauneta funds were used and the final source was $500,000 in revenue bonds.
In the five years of Village ownership the nursing home, Wauneta Care and Therapy Center, has seen various changes.
The kitchen has been remodeled and updated, and new furniture has since been donated.
The nursing home is managed by Rural Health Development, a company focused on helping communities and providers meet the health care needs of their citizens and patients.
Although ownership and names have changed, there are still familiar faces working at the nursing home.
