Village board review audit, nursing home special meeting

The Village of Wauneta Board of Trustees met Feb. 7, 2018 for its annual meeting with a full agenda. One of the main topics at the regular meeting was reviewing the special nursing home meeting that took place Feb. 7, 2018 at Wauneta Care and Therapy Center. See page two for the full story on the special meeting.
“I’ll tell you what, I learned a lot at that meeting,” said board member, Rick Einspahr.
To be fully educated and aware of any financial updates, the board agreed to have the annual nursing home committee meeting open to the public so all board members can attend.
After much of the same discussion the board had at the special meeting, board member Page Johnston volunteered to look into possibly re-bonding the nursing home.
“We revisit the issue with the community. When we bought the thing [WCTC] there were 30 plus residents and corn was six or seven bucks. Everything was a different landscape. We had public meetings and said this is what we are going to do. But now, corn is three bucks and instead of 34 residents we have 28,” said Johnston.
The village currently has a revenue bond. A general obligation bond could possibly be taken out that would pay of the current revenue bond, and would require a public vote, ultimately including the community on upcoming financial decisions.
With the board’s approval Johnston plans on talking with the village accountants to come up with concrete information and options with the understanding that the village will not be able to operate the nursing home without subsidies.
