Sales tax informational meeting Jan. 16

With mailing of ballots quickly approaching, Wauneta officials have set the time and date for a public informational meeting on a referendum to provide a village sales tax to stabilize the local nursing home’s finances.
Village Clerk Evelyn Skelton said the meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. MT Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the community building.
It will include village trustees, Wauneta Care and Therapy Center Administrator Lisa Kisinger and possibly the facility’s accountant.
The vote will be on a 1 percent sales tax in the village, which will cover the same items on which the state charges sales tax. The money will be dedicated to stabilizing the finances of the village-owned Care and Therapy Center; if anything is left over after that is done, it may go for other city infrastructure needs.
The vote will be conducted by mail. Ballots will be mailed out between Jan. 21 and Feb. 1. They must be in the County Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. Feb. 12. They can be either mailed in or delivered by hand to the clerk. They also can be turned in or mailed in earlier than the due date.
