Holyoke shooting leaves one dead

Saturday, July 8, Garrett Stephenson, age 33, was involved in an altercation at his residence in Holyoke that ultimately resulted in his death. The alleged shooter, 33-year-old Jon McMartin, Stephenson’s roommate, is being held in the Logan County Detention Center in Sterling.
Stephenson worked at Sullivan’s Appliance and Air, where owner Jim Leibbrandt said he was a really good employee and a hard worker.
“Garret Stephenson and I had a great working relationship,” he said. “He will really be missed by all of us at Sullivan’s Appliance. As we worked together, our relationship grew, and he became more of a friend.”
Leibbrandt said that Stephenson, formerly of Marshalltown, Iowa, moved to Holyoke about a year and a half ago to join his longtime friend McMartin who was already living in Holyoke.
Although Stephenson was relatively new to the community, Leibbrandt reflected that many people in town had the opportunity to meet him while they were working together, and people commented often about what a nice young man he was.
According to the Holyoke Police Department, Stephenson and McMartin were roommates. Phillips County Communications Center received a call July 8 at 4:38 p.m., after a verbal argument became physical and a gunshot was heard.
