WP splits season-opening games against Wallace, Chase County

Both Wauneta-Palisade basketball teams opened the season with wins at Wallace Thursday night, then losing to Chase County at home Friday.
WP girls’ coach Matt Cox liked what he saw from his team at Wallace.
“I really loved our pace,” Cox said. “We have plenty of room for improvement, but I was happy with our effort, defensive intensity, and our tempo.”
Michaela Dukes and Dakota Ingold got back-to-back baskets for the Broncos off assists from Haylee Sandman. Sandman grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to give WP baskets on three consecutive possessions.
After Wallace tied the game, Payton Yearous found Sandman on back-to-back possessions to give WP the lead.
Seniors Monique Gooden and Ingold fueled the WP offense late in the first quarter and early in the second. The pair scored 14 points in a row for WP, helping the Broncos to a 29-18 lead at the half.
Neither team had much success from the field early in the third quarter, but made it to the free throw line often. The Broncos especially struggled. Maycee Wheeler made WP’s first field goal halfway through the quarter. Paired with a Destany Simpson basket and variety of free throws, WP led 37-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
