WP picks up wins over Medicine Valley and Sutherland
Now 14-5 on the season, the Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team will try to carry the momentum of a three-game win streak through the season’s final three games.
Thursday, Feb. 2, WP got a win over 6-9 Medicine Valley. The Broncos got off to a strong start, leading 10-3 after three minutes behind four points from Duncan Rector. Seniors Greg Gaston and Brody Nordhausen kept the momentum going, scoring nine and eight points respectively, in the first quarter.
WP expanded its 21-11 lead in the second quarter, making two field goals and adding six free throws, to 31-20 at halftime.
The Broncos opened the second half with a two-point bucket by Gaston and a three-pointer by Cash Yearous. The fast start didn’t last, however. After a putback by Caid Doetker gave WP a 36-25 lead, MV scored eight-straight points and cut the lead to 38-33. WP led 42-36 at the end of the quarter.
WP was unable to completely shake off the Raiders in the fourth quarter. As time ran down in the game, the MV began to foul and WP traded free throws for Raider baskets. Over the final minute, the Broncos made two-of-six free throws before Gaston made two from the charity stripe with nine seconds to give WP the win, 58-55.
Gaston led WP with 23 points, four assists and three steals.
Yearous and Rector each scored nine points. Rector had eight rebounds and two blocks. Doetker also had eight rebounds.
WP made 20-32 free throws in the game, while MV made 7-13.
Friday night, WP picked up another close win, this time over Sutherland (6-10).
Slower paced than many of WP’s contests, the Broncos held a 18-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, thanks again to the efforts of Gaston and Nordhausen. The pair combined for 11 first quarter points.
