Monique Gooden gets off her attack before the Maywood/Hayes Center blocker can respond. Wauneta-Palisade swept the Wolves in the Thursday night contest
Six matches in five days tests Lady Broncos’ mettle
The Wauneta-Palisade volleyball team improved its record to 12-4 with four wins in six games last week.
WP’s best game of the week came Thursday against top 10 ranked Maywood/Hayes Center.
WP came out swinging against the fired up Wolves (10-3). With Destiny Beacham serving and Faith Simpson controlling play at the net, WP jumped out to an 8-3 lead.
MHC couldn’t erase the five point lead. The combination of Lanee Nordhausen serving and Simpson attacking propelled the Broncos to 24-11 lead. WP won the first game 25-14.
Whatever momentum MHC had gathered at the end of the first set didn’t last for long in the second. Tied 3-3 early on, WP too control with four-straight points. Behind three aces from Haylee Sandman, WP increased the lead 14-6. The Broncos controlled throughout the set, winning 25-9.
The dominance continued early in the third game. Spreading the ball around, WP got kills from Beacham, Simspon, Sandman and Monique Gooden as the Broncos took a 12-5 lead and doubled up on the Wolves, 20-10.
But MHC wasn’t ready to call it a night. The Broncos offense stalled at 24 as the Wolves crept closer.
A kill by Payton Yearous gave WP the 25-21 win.
Simpson had 20 kills in the match. Michaela Dukes had 17 assists and Gooden totaled 10 digs.
