Overtime win sends Broncos back to the state tournament

Wauneta-Palisade fans were on the edge of their seats Tuesday, Feb. 28 in Bartley during the District D4 basketball game. The Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team held off a late Wilcox-Hildreth rally to earn a state tournament berth.
WP held a 5-2 lead after three minutes of play, but would trail 10-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Wilcox-Hildreth extended its lead in the second quarter. By midway through the second quarter, WP trailed 12-19. A timeout by WP coach Dave Kuhlen fired up the Broncos. Dennis Cavanaugh and Cash Yearous hit back-to-back three-point baskets to pull WP back to within one, 18-19. A basket by the Falcons finished off first half scoring and WP trailed 18-21 at halftime.
WP made its run early in the third quarter behind the scoring of Greg Gaston.
The senior scored 10 points on WP’s first four possessions in the second half and WP found quickly itself with a 28-23 lead.
A three-pointer by Duncan Rector, followed by a steal and layup by Gaston pushed the lead to 33-25. The Broncos’ offense cooled, however. By the end of the third quarter, WP’s lead had shrunk to 33-32.
Gaston added six more points, to go with a three-pointer by Yearous and two pointer by Brody Nordhausen, to give WP a 44-38 lead with 2:30 left in the game.
As fouls piled up on the Broncos, the Falcons went to work from the charity stripe.
With 17.9 seconds left, WP found itself clinging to a 46-43 lead.
As time wound down, Wilcox-Hildreth had one more trick up its sleeve.
Big man Lantz Grauerholz spotted up and hit a three pointer with five seconds left to tie up the game and force overtime.
Yearous jump started scoring in the overtime period with a three-pointer. Later, after a Gaston free throw, Cavanaugh got a steal for the Broncos and fed the ball to Gaston. Gaston passed back to Cavanaugh for a layup. One more free throw by Gaston gave WP a 53-51 lead.
The Raiders missed two late chances, giving WP the win.
Gaston finished the night with 30 points. Yearous totaled nine points with three three-pointers.
