Lady Broncos wrap up busy, successful week; improve to 9-8

The Wauneta-Palisade volleyball team is picking up steam as post season play moves closer. WP went 5-1 last week to improve it’s record to 9-8.
WP’s biggest win of the week came Thursday at home over Maywood/Hayes Center (8-5).
WP Head Coach Terra Higgins said she feels there is a bit of a rivalry between the schools which helps motivate the team.
The Broncos got off to a rough start in the contest, but kills from Michaela Dukes, Alexa Sandman and Payton Yearous helped WP battle back from a five-point deficit to tie the game at 10. As the MHC attack errors piled up, WP pulled away, winning the first set 25-15.
“I love how strong our girls came out in set 1,” Higgins said. “They had tons of energy!”
The Wolves didn’t roll over and concede to the Broncos. WP’s momentum gave it an early lead in the second set, but MHC battled back to take the set 21-25.
WP’s hitters made the most of their time at the net during the third set. Monique Gooden, Yearous and Haylee Sandman had early kills as the Broncos battled back and forth with MHC. As the set wore on, Gooden and H. Sandman added to their totals. Two kills by A. Sandman down the stretch sealed the set three win, 25-18.
The fourth set remained tight, but at 16-16 WP found another gear. H. Sandman, Dukes, A. Sandman and Yearous kept the MHC defense on the heels. Those kills by the quartet, paired with MHC attack errors gave the match to WP, 25-18.
Higgins said the highlight was how well the team played together.
“They worked their tails off, played with intensity, and had fun out there on the court,” she said.
She also said WP’s setters continue to improve each week.
“They both made some great decision on when to dump the ball which is something we have been working on in practice!
WP’s busy week started off with a two-set sweep of Potter-Dix (5-6). Higgins said the team was ready to play Tuesday.
“We served very aggressively which really paid off in the second set.”
The Broncos took home the tourney title with a win over Paxton (2-11). Higgins said Paxton  showed a lot of improvement from when WP played the Tigers Aug. 30. She added, playing at home gave Paxton a boost.
“I was so proud of how our girls responded though and were able to regain their composure,” Higgins said. “Michaela Dukes did an awesome job serving at the end of match three that lead us to a win!
