Lady Broncos take down Falcons, Roughriders
The Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team notched two more wins last week to improve to 8-3.
Beat Hitchcock County
WP beat Hitchcock County for the second time Friday. The teams faced off in the Cattle Trail Tournament Dec. 8 with the Broncos winning in overtime.
Three-pointers by Monique Gooden and Faith Simpson got the Broncos off on the right foot in the first quarter.
Destiny Beacham and Destany Simpson added baskets to help WP take a 15-7 advantage.
“I loved the way we took care of the basketball early in the game,” WP Head Coach Matt Cox said. “We didn’t do a bunch of useless dribbling and it led to easy layups.”
Each team made three field goals and one free throw in the second quarter.
Neither team lit up the scoreboard in the third quarer. Natalie Ramirez scored seven points for WP after halftime.
Leading 32-22, WP put up its best offensive effort over the final eight minutes. The Broncos made nine-of-15 free throws and four field goals to seal the 49-35 win.
F. Simpson scored 19 points for WP. Beacham and Ramirez scored eight and seven points, respectively. F. Simpson also grabbed 12 steals and eight rebounds. Ramirez and F. Simpson each had two assists.
Cox was pleased with WP rebounding effort, but would like to see the Broncos do better from the charity stripe. WP made 12-26 free throws on the night.
“We got a nice group of kids in the scoring column but its never enough,” Cox said. “We went pretty deep on the bench tonight and they all did a great job. It’s nice to see everyone settling into their roles on the team.”
