Lady Broncos split games with South Platte, Hyannis

The Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team faced very different opponents last week.
The Broncos opened the weekend with a loss to undefeated South Platte, then picked up a win over winless Hyannis Saturday.
A strong first quarter got WP off on the right foot against South Platte. Seven points from Cali Cox, paired with four by Payton Yearous and two from Alexa Sandman, helped WP to a 13-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams struggled in the second quarter. Haylee Sandman converted a conventional three-point play and Chloe Stehno added a basket to give WP five points in the quarter.
While that may not sound like much, the Bronco defense held the Knights to one field goal and two free throws in the quarter.
