The Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team opened its weekend of basketball action Friday with a win over South Platte, but lost at Hyannis the following night.

Win over South Platte
    WP started the night off strong against South Platte (3-3).
    The Broncos opened up a 6-0 lead with baskets by Natalie Ramirez and Michaela Dukes, plus free throws from Monique Gooden.
    Two baskets by Destiny Beacham pushed WP’s lead to 10-3.
    South Platte bounced back and narrowed WP’s lead to 15-11 by the end of the half.
    Two quick fouls by Faith Simpson sent her to the bench and the Broncos battled to a 25-25 halftime tie behind five points by Gooden and four from Reagan Skow.
    With Simpson back in action in the third quarter, the Broncos put the pedal to the metal.
    Simpson scored six points in the quarter and WP added baskets by from Dukes, Gooden, Beacham and Destany Simpson.
    Holding a ten-point advantage at the start of the fourth quarter, WP maintained a double-digit lead over the final eight minutes. F. Simpson scored 13 points to close out the game and WP won 61-48.
    “I was really happy with our scoring column and the way we ran through our offenses tonight,” WP Head Coach Matt Cox said. “We struggled with a box-and-one early in the first half, made some adjustments at halftime and did a better job of finding soft spots in the defense.”
    Cox added that WP had its best rebounding performance of the year in the game.
    F. Simpson and Gooden finished in double figures with 21 and 13 points, respectively.
    Simpson added nine rebounds and nine steals. Gooden had four rebounds.
