Lady Broncos finish RPAC tournament with a win
The Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team avenged two losses to Hitchcock County in the team’s final game of the RPAC tournament, 50-47.
Michaela Dukes got WP on the board and five Broncos scored in the first quarter as WP took a 11-7 lead.
Faith Simpson stepped up to score 11 points in the second quarter for WP. The Broncos held a 25-19 lead at halftime.
A strong third quarter helped WP extend its lead. A three-pointer by Monique Gooden at the end of the third quarter gave WP a 42-30 lead and was proved to be important.
Hitchcock County came storming back over in the fourth quarter. WP was outscored 8-17 the final eight minutes, but held on for the win. Simpson scored all of WP’s fourth quarter points.
“It was a close game the entire time and we played really well,” said WP Coach Matt Cox. “I liked our ball movement at times, but we had way too many turnovers.”
As in previous meetings with the Falcons, Cox said Hitchcock County’s full-court pressure gave WP all sorts of trouble. Cox was also disappointed with WP’s rebounding effort.
