Dennis Cavanaugh sets up a touchdown run late in Wauneta-Palisade’s game against North Central. Cavanaugh would score on the next play

Football season ends with playoff loss to North Central

Wauneta-Palisade’s stay in the Class D2 football playoffs was unpleasant in many ways.
WP traveled nearly five hours to Basset to take on the North Central Knights Thursday, Oct. 26.
Once there the Broncos battled the weather nearly as much as the Knights. The temperature hovered around 40 degrees with the wind chill around freezing as the wind blew at 27 mph.
With the wind in its face, North Central received the opening kickoff and quickly completed a pass into the wind.
While the Knights scored on the possession, WP lost a fumble on its opening series. North Central capitalized and the Broncos trailed 0-12 with 4:11 left in the first quarter.
North Central tacked on another 26 points in the first half. In spite of snow pellets pelting the field for a short time in the second quarter, WP put together a drive deep into North Central territory.
A 39-yard run by Austen Rozelle put WP within spitting distance of the North Central end zone.
The Broncos moved down to the Knights’ two-yard line, but a holding penalty and incomplete passes stalled the drive.
