Despite struggles, WP girls’ basketball team has bright future

There were few ups and many downs for this season’s Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team.
Injuries played a factor over the course of the season, both in games and getting the most out of practices.
WP opened the season with a win over Wallace, but lost sophomore Payton Yearous for the season.
The next night, WP fell to Chase County and lost sophomore Haylee Sandman for 10 games.
The Broncos split two games with senior Monique Gooden injured on the bench.
WP beat Wallace twice, but lost to the Wildcats in the RPAC tournament.
The Broncos split games with Medicine Valley and lost two winnable games to Arapahoe and one to Perkins County. WP had the lead going into the fourth quarter in all four games.
Those near misses left the squad with an 8-14 record, with a winning record in striking distance for the young Broncos.
WP had two seniors on the floor this year and WP Head Coach Matt Cox regretted not getting the pair farther into the postseason, although they did make two trips to the state tournament in their careers.
“Mo and Dakota did a wonderful job for us this year,” Cox said. “They did everything I asked them to do.”
Cox credited Gooden with taking the initiative to improve her skills on her own time.
“It showed this season,” Cox said. “She put together some very good offensive performances and she was our most aggressive offensive player with the way she could dribble attack down the lane. She is going to get the opportunity to play at the next level, and get to further her education at the same time.”
