Check-in numbers lag behind 2017 after first weekend of deer season

Check-in stations in Chase County have seen fewer deer this season as compared to 2017, according to Angie West with Wauneta Crossroads and Ron Schoenberger with Laker’s Bait and Tackle.
In it’s second year as a check-in station, Wauneta Crossroads checked in 158 deer through Monday afternoon, which West said was not as many as last year when they checked in 176.
Unsurprisingly the first day featured mostly bucks checked in at Crossroads. West said quite a few doe were brought in as the weekend progressed.
Muley deer have far exceeded white tail check ins, she added.
Youth, including some from Crossroads’ sponsored hunters safety class, have checked in 27 deer.
Hunters from across Nebraska brought in deer, in addition to sportsmen from Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Wyoming.
Chase and Hayes counties have checked in the most deer, with “quite a few” coming from Dundy and some from Hitchcock County.
The amount of corn still standing has slowed hunters down, Schoenberger believes.
Hunters have checked in 195 deer at his Enders’ establishment, compared to 232 last year.
