Broncos pick up momentum with two blowout wins

With two dominant wins last week, the Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball is now 5-2 on the season with upcoming games against Chase County and Arapahoe.

South Platte
Friday night the Broncos hosted South Platte (0-6).
With the help of a suffocating press, WP jumped out to a 10-0 lead and closed out the first quarter on a 15-5 run thanks in part to eight points by Dennis Cavanaugh.
WP built on its 25-5 lead in the second quarter with nine Broncos finding the bottom of the basket. By halftime, WP led 55-11 and the clock ran throughout the second half as the Broncos cruised to a 76-22 win.
All 14 Broncos saw at least two quarters of action.
WP made 22 baskets in the game, while holding Hyannis to nine baskets.
Cavanaugh and Harchelroad each scored 10 points for the Broncos. Cash Yearous, Duncan Rector and Ty Duvel added nine points each.
Austen Rozelle finished with double-digit rebounds, 10. Caid Doetker grabbed nine rebounds.
Overall WP out rebounded South Platte 46-13. WP had 29 offensive rebounds.
George Lee, Rector and Ben Anderjaska each had five assists. Rector had seven steals. Doetker blocked three shots.

Hyannis
WP traveled to Hyannis (0-6) Saturday and the story was much the same.
With six Broncos putting points on the board in the first quarter, WP jumped out to an 18-5 lead after holding Hyannis to two field goals over the first eight minutes.
The offense picked up even more in the second quarter behind two three-pointers by Yearous
Yearous added three more threes in the third quarter.
As he did against South Platte, WP Head Coach Dave Kuhlen cleared the bench in the fourth quarter.
With six three-pointers, Yearous paced WP with 24 points in the 72-29 win.
Dalton Harchelroad and Rector each scored nine points.
Rozelle and Doetker had seven and six rebounds, respectively.
Lee and Rector each dished out six assists.
Rozelle had six steals, while Rector and Anderjaska each nabbed five.
Although the scores were similar, Kuhlen thought Hyannis was the better team. He was pleased with the Broncos efforts against the Longhorns.
