Broncos hoping third time’s a charm

The Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team will try to keep its eight-game winning streak alive when it faces Paxton for the third time this season in the first round of the state tournament Thursday.
    The game will begin at 2:45 p.m. MT at Lincoln East High School.
    Duncan Rector is the only Bronco averaging double figures, with 18 points per game. Dennis Cavanaugh averages 8.8 points, Joel Maris 6.9 points, Ty Duvel and Caid Doetker 5.8 points and Dalton Harchelroad 5.5 points.
    Many Broncos have been picking up their scoring over the last month of the season. In February, Cavanaugh has increased his scoring to 13.7 points per game; Harchelroad just under 8 points per game; Duvel 7.3 points; and George Lee 6.5 points.
    Doetker and Cavanaugh are leading WP in rebounds with each averaging just under six rebounds a game.
    Offensively, the teams are a match. WP averages 60.8 points per game while the Tigers are averaging 60.2 points per game. The Broncos allow 43.2 points per game compared to Paxton giving up 34.6.
    Paxton is led by Blake Brewster. The 6’10” junior is averaging 20.4 points and 10.3 rebounds this season. Senior Kaden Schow is the only other Tiger in double figures, averaing 13.4 points per game.
