Broncos get home win over Chase County, 65-55

After a two-year break from their intra-county rivalry, the Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team took on Chase County Feb. 19 and snapped a two-game losing streak to the Longhorns.
Chase County entered the game with a 1-3 record after back-to-back overtime games.
WP, meanwhile, was on a two-game win streak.
Cash Yearous opened scoring in the game with a three-pointer. Chase County scored five-straight points to take the advantage, but it would be its only lead in the game.
Following a putback by Dennis Cavanaugh, Yearous hit another three-pointer before WP closed the quarter on a 13-0 run behind seven points by Dalton Harchelroad. Harchelroad combined with Yearous and Austen Rozelle for three-straight steals and layups.
“We were able to turn them over and get some finishes off of those steals. Turnover conversion is very important to our success,” said WP Head Coach Dave Kuhlen.
Holding the 23-7 advantage, WP extended its lead in the second quarter.
The Broncos’ defense held Chase County to only two field goals, but fouls added up for the Broncos.
Chase County made eight-of-12, free throws in the quarter, while WP went to the charity stripe four times, making two.
The Broncos made six shots from the floor however, and led 38-18 at halftime.
“I think all high school kids play better when they are ahead on the scoreboard, so good starts are always welcome,” Kuhlen said. “With the style that we play, there are usually going to be big runs. We need to learn how to control an opponent’s run better than we did in the second half.”
