Broncos fall to high flying Eagles in season opener

Wauneta-Palisade kicked off its 2017 football season Friday night against a 2-0 Garden County team.
The high scoring Eagles had put up 62 and 74 points in its opening games of the season, while WP remained grounded after Leyton forfeited the Broncos’ first game of the season due to low numbers and injuries.
Garden County looked like the more experienced team in the first half of Friday’s game.
The Eagles scored two touchdowns in both the first and second quarters to take a 32-0 halftime lead.
WP showed its mettle in the second half. Dalton Harchelroad returned the second half kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown.
A second touchdown by Harchelroad, along with the two-point conversion when Duncan Rector found Ty Duvel open in the corner of the end zone, cut into the Garden County lead to 18, 14-32.
WP couldn’t hold the momentum for long, however. The Eagles returned the ensuing kickoff up the east sideline and to the end zone.
Garden County rounded out scoring in the game with a fourth quarter touchdown.
Harchelroad led the way for the Broncos on the ground, finishing with 62 yards on 21 rushes. Duvel had 11 carries for 45 yard, while leading WP with three receptions for 61 yards.
Rector completed seven-of-17 pass attempts for 119 yards.
