Broncos add wins; host Paxton, RPAC tournament this week

The Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team made it seven straight wins last week with victories over Perkins County and Garden County.
WP overcame a slow start in its win over the Plainsmen (4-9). Trailing 1-4, the Broncos scored on four straight possessions to take a 9-4 lead. As the Perkins County offense fired up, WP found itself trailing 13-16 at the end of the first quarter.
WP was never able to take the lead in the second quarter. A three-pointer by Duncan Rector tied the game at 24, but Perkins County answered on its ensuing possession. WP trailed 24-27 at halftime.
Three 3s in a row by Rector quickly gave WP a lead in the second half. Dennis Cavanaugh added a conventional three-point play to increase the Broncos’ lead. WP entered the final stanza leading 42-40. Perkins County was able to tie the game at 49, but with nine fourth-quarter points from Ty Duvel and the Broncos hitting  6-8 free throws in the fourth quarter, WP brought home the 60-56 win.
Rector and Duvel finished in double figures for WP. Rector knocked in 23 points and Duvel added 11 points.
Ben Anderjaska had team highs with four assists and six steals. George Lee led the Broncos with six rebounds.
WP never trailed in its win over Garden County at home Friday. The Broncos held GC to four first-quarter points while WP got points from Anderjaska, Joel Maris, Caid Doetker, Rector and Cavanaugh.
Both teams found their stroke in the second quarter. Each team scored 21 points, including 10 by Rector.
